Frequently Asked Questions
“Questions and answers are an opportunity to cultivate our capacity to listen with openness, receptivity, and stillness. Listening in this way, we will surely receive the medicine we need.”
Questions on what to expect.
You will be lying on the floor for the duration of the session. Have your yoga mat, wear comfortable clothes, and bring anything else that will provide you physical comfort for at least an hour. Examples include:
— Blanket. As we settle deeper into a meditative state (much like sleeping), your core body temperature will drop. Covering up with a blanket will help you remain warm.
— Pillow. If it is uncomfortable for you to lay with your head flat on the floor, a small pillow for support is recommended.
— Bolster. As with your head, you may consider support for your knees if they have a tendency to hyperextend while lying flat.
— Eye pillow or mask. Having a little assistance with a mask or eye pillow to keep your eyes closed is more than recommended, it borders on necessity. With that in mind, I have eye masks available to use for anyone that does not have one of their own.
You can expect to, though you may not, fall asleep. If you are in a group session, your neighbor may fall asleep. This is common.
You will hear a number of sounds; some intended (those of the instruments being played) while others are not necessarily intentional. You or your neighbor may snore or pass gas. An ambulance siren may be nearby. A neighboring dog may bark. Anything you hear during a session is okay and part of the process.
Expect the unexpected / have an open mind. Whatever you experience during your sound healing journey is exactly what you were meant to experience. Some have reported seeing colors, some report emotional responses such as crying, others report having a lovely nap. Again, all of it is perfectly tailored to you and how your body responds to the frequencies.
Questions on safety.
Yes, it is a matter of life and major medical distress that individuals with an artificial cardiac pacemaker DO NOT participate as the frequencies can interfere with your medical device.
Those that should be cautious:
— Individuals with sound-induced epilepsy
— Individuals in their first trimester of pregnancy
— Individuals with severe mental health diagnosis
Please consult your physician or mental health professional first and always inform your sound healing practitioner as such.
Questions on benefits, in a nutshell.
Though some of the following may be felt after a single 1-hour group session, most are achieved with continued, regular participation. Much like building muscle for improved strength, it requires more than one weight-lifting workout before you see/feel results.
— Mental benefits: Reduce stress and anxiety. Identify and release trauma. Greater ability to embrace whatever thoughts arise. Find focus, clarity, and creativity.
— Physical benefits: Boost your immunity. Alleviate chronic pain. Reduce blood pressure. Increase blood flow. Improve digestion.
— Emotional benefits: Increase resilience during stressful situations / decrease your reactions to resistance. Process grief and loss.
All without saying a word. Benefits, of course, are not limited to those mentioned above. Your experience and benefits are unique to you and only you will know the full extent of your healing potential once you start your journey.
Other things you may wonder about.
What to do before? Come with an open mind; in other words, try not to have any set expectations. Don’t forget your yoga mat and other personal necessities!
What to do during? Relax and let the frequencies carry you where they may. If something feels really off, you may:
— if in a group session, quietly get up and a take as long as you need, even if it’s the entirety of the session, before you return.
— if in a one-on-one session, raise your hand to alert your practitioner. We can then discuss, regroup, and start again.
What to do after? Hydrate. I offer a herbal tea ceremony afterwards to help reintegrate into the world. But always drink plenty of water and rest if your day allows it to integrate the experience. Journaling is also an incredibly helpful tool.
